Behind it beats a smooth and sturdy Miyota 9015 automatic. I still don’t understand the connection between Avalon, Excalibur, and diving, although according to legend, watery tarts and farcical aquatic ceremonies were involved. Very nice.Īround back, Nodus has repeated the Excalibur illustration from the original and vastly improved it, now depicting just the hilt stamped in a high relief instead of the previous engraving of the entire sword that looked a little lost in that space. I must give extra kudos for the color-matched date wheel and truncated marker at 6 o’clock. Nodus has taken a collection of strong elements and managed to get them all to work in harmony. The polished hands and hour markers are similar to the original, but their thick faceted frames give them a sturdier, more aggressive appearance, even as some of those markers have been shortened. When looking for updates, you will most likely notice the waffle dial first, and that bold texture really does provide some powerful character. Speaking of lume, you get plenty of T-C1 SuperLuminova for s strong blue-white glow. The insert is glossy ceramic, engraved, and fully lumed. A ball-bearing mechanism provides flawless action through its 120-click rotation. The bezel is slightly smaller than the case (42mm) and has the same Doxa-esque edge pattern as before. Yes, I just sort of draped it over and pinched the bracelet, but you get the idea. Its width diffuses its thickness, and its contours fit comfortably on my 6.75″ wrist. Just as it did before, the Avalon wears easily. At each end, the case tapers to meet a 20mm lug box. It is a big watch, but it does not wear that way thanks to a gentle arc, a broad polished bevel, and an aggressive undercut, all of which trick the eye into seeing less bulk. It measures 43.5mm wide, 48mm long, and 12.75mm thick.

All of those elements return in the series II, but each is improved. I loved its turtle case, top-notch bracelet and clasp, and clean modern dial. I reviewed the original Avalon back in 2019.

That said, my initial impression is that this is an excellent watch. Oh, and the watch sold out in a hot minute, so if you like it you will have to wait until May when they should be back in stock.

This will be more of my initial impressions of the Avalon II as opposed to a full hands-on evaluation. You see, I didn’t want to risk damaging a prize watch by sizing and wearing it, and frankly, I was so busy preparing for the show, I wouldn’t have had the time anyway. Yes, District Time is pretty awesome that way, but I digress. You see, I had this lovely Nodus Avalon II in hand for only a brief time before the District Time show, where it was given away as a door prize. The first batch of Coral Yellow and Trench Black watches already sold out until mid-April - a testament that the Avalon II may even surpass the Avalon in popularity.I need to admit upfront that this will not be my usual review. The Avalon II is available with a Seaspray White, Pelagic Blue, Trench Black, or Coral Yellow dial. The ball-bearing loaded bezel provides the most precise clicks. The Viton gaskets make this sleek and thin watch resistant to chemicals and heat in addition to water. The design is reminiscent of mid-century dive watches, but the durability and utility scream 2022. The Nodus Avalon II is the sequel to the original Avalon, which put the small, Los Angeles-based watchmaker on the map. The 9015 is well-known as a reliable, and affordable caliber and Nodus has also regulated each watch to be accurate to +/- 8 secs/day. The watch is powered by the Japanese Miyota 9015 automatic movement. The dial has a tapisserie waffle pattern that lends the watch face subtle depth and texture while still maintaining a refined look. In spite of its size, the watch is still very wearable thanks to a compact 48mm lug-to-lug and being a slim 12.5mm tall. The watch has a fully CNC’d steel cushion case that measures 43.5mm in diameter. For the highest legibility the watch’s hands, markers, and bezel insert are packed with luminous T-C1 X1 Grade Super-LumiNova.

The Avalon II offers up to 300 meters of water resistance, which means users never have to take the Nodus Avalon II off - unless they want to. The Nodus Avalon II is a dive watch made to thrive underwater. They can dive into the depths of the sea, but many times, they are chosen simply for their attractive look and collector value. Dive watches are known for their durability, classic style, and versatility.
